Creationist Mum Writes… What we need to prevent another 9/11 is more religious zealots

The email below appeared after a chat with my mum where she insisted the world is a better place with religion in it. On a whim I decided to pose to her the rhetorical device first used, I think, by Christopher Hitchins. In it, he challenges his opponent to name one act of goodness or kindness inspired by religion that could not otherwise be performed by a non-religious person. His sting comes in the follow-up question where he asks them to name evil acts inspired by religion that no normal person would do. While no examples can be found for the the first question, countless examples of the latter instantly spring to mind. My mum said she would have a think and about two weeks later I received this reply…

Hi Sam, How are things? In answer to your question, I think you said ‘ Give me one good thing a ‘Christian’ has done that a none Christian has not done. If I’ve got it wrong, forgive me, it was only verbalized. I would have got back to you earlier, but we have been quite busy. The following words of an american commentator given in the aftermath of terrorist attacks in the USA said ; ‘Maybe now those who form our foreign policy will wake up to the reality of old-fashioned diplomacy. Integrity, and fairness rather than putting their trust in big armies. In other words, when other things fail maybe we will come round to seeing and practising the principles given by a great leader many years ago – the principles delineated in the Sermon on the Mount.’ This commentator saw in the midst of the shaking the need to turn to the principles which belong to an unshakeable kingdom, These principle’s of Gods Kingdom, have shaped civilizations throughout the world for good. Here are a few – ‘ Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.’ Ephesians 4: 31, 32. ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good. Matthew 5: 7-9, 44-45. I , plus thousand of others find it difficult to live like this on a natural level if we are honest with ourselves, however, when you truly have given your life over to your Heavenly Father, know His forgiveness through the finished work of Jesus Christ , paying the dept for your failures, know Him personally, we receive His Holy Spirit, it is still a continued process of allowing Him to daily have His way in our lives, He will enable us to be as He is, the evidence, or the fruit of the Holy Spirit is – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22,23. Millions & millions of people’s lives have and are being restored through these principles being acted out. Christ came to make us whole, body soul and spirit, for eternity. love Mum.
